Coincidentally, San Francisco’s first Hall of Justice building was located at 750 Kearny St, on the site of what is now the Hilton Financial, scene of Scorpio’s first victim. If you visit the Hilton Financial there is a memorial plaque at the hotel entrance which describes the history of that site (below). While the plaque refers to ‘City Hall’, the site was the location of the Hall of Justice. In 2009, City Hall and the Hall of Justice are seperate buildings at seperate locations – City Hall is at 1 Dr Carlton B Goodlett Place while the Hall of Justice is at 850 Bryant Street. Noehill.com has some excellent detail about the 750 Kearny St block and adjacent Portsmouth Square.

There have been two Hall of Justice buildings on the Kearny Street site. According to the memorial plaque at the Hilton the first building on the site was originally the Jenny Lind Theatre. There were three Jenny Lind theatres – the first two were destroyed by fires, and the third was purchased by the City for use as City Hall in 1852. That building was destroyed by the earthquake of 1906, and the rebuilt Hall of Justice remained on site until demolition in 1967 (source). That final building was famous as the location of the tv series Ironside. In 1967 the building was demolished to make way for the Holiday Inn Select Downtown and Spa (which became the Hilton Financial).

The Hall of Justice at 850 Bryant St is a public building with lots of interesting activity. The building is a 15 minute walk south of Market Street.
